The Parable of the Shrewd Manager

From up here I can see that there are some people in the congregation who take notes during the sermon.  So this morning I’d like to make it easy for you.  The first thing you can write down is “Stealing is wrong.”  It doesn’t matter if you are a child tempted by the gum at the check-out at FreshCo or a high-powered CEO cooking the books, it’s just wrong.  “Thou shalt not steal” is after all, one of the Ten Commandments.

Reading today’s parable, we’d all be a little bit more comfortable if Jesus had issued a disclaimer.  Couldn’t he have given some indication that he didn’t like what the manager did?

But no!  Not only does the rich master in the story commend the manager who basically stole from him, Jesus himself implies that we, “the people of the light” should imitate that shrewd manager.

What are we to do with this outrageous story? (Click HERE to continue reading.)
