How many of us take our church Sunday School and Christian Education programs for granted? They just happen, don’t they? Year after year, every September we send our children back to the usual routine of school, sports, and piano lessons. We resume our bible studies and weekly or monthly group commitments.
Do we ever stop to think about who prepares the material? Who gives themselves to teaching it week after week?
At the service on September 17th we celebrated our educational ministry. Paddy Eastwood led us in commissioning our children and youth, and our teachers and leaders, beginning with the reading of John 15:1-8, and then Psalm 137:4-6 and Colossians 3:16-17 .
The teachers and leaders acknowledged their work as a calling from God. The children promised to come ready to listen and participate. As a congregation we promised “to support them in their task, praying for them and recognizing their contribution to God’s work in this community, and to supporting their work by getting to know the children through interactions with them and acts of kindness and generosity.”
Indeed, our educational ministry is a calling from God. How do you respond?
