What’s Next?

Categories: Church,Events

June 30th marked the beginning of a transitional period for our congregation. It was the official last day of the Rev. Dr. Gerard Booy’s ministry in Haney Church.

What’s next for him?

He is stepping away from congregational ministry to begin, in his words, “a practice as Spiritual Director through which I hope to provide spiritual guidance for individuals, and workshops and retreats for small groups. I hope that there will also be opportunities to do consultation with churches as time goes on. I will be working primarily from home.”

During his last worship service with us, he participated in a Liturgy for the Ending of Pastoral Ministry, led by the Rev. Bob Garvin, retired minister and an elder on our Session.

What’s next for our congregation?

Presbytery has appointed the Rev. Bernie Skelding to be our Interim Moderator. He will moderate Session meetings, ensure there will be regular Sunday pulpit supply, and guide a vacancy committee in its search for HPC’s new minister. He led our service on July 2nd when the pulpit was officially “preached vacant”.

Bernie is currently minister in Coquitlam Presbyterian Church. He and his wife Jenn have three children, Hannah, Reid and Leif.

During the summer months Sunday services in HPC will be led by one of three very familiar-to-us ministers from our midst: our Associate Minister Paddy Eastwood, and retired ministers Dorne Cornish and Bob Garvin.

While we will sorely miss Gerard Booy’s leadership, we support him in his desire to follow God’s call into a new ministry. God will be with him just as He will be with us during these changing times.

During our pulpit vacancy it is important to know that the pastoral care of the congregation continues. The Pastoral Care team is there to add an extra layer of care in the congregation through the ministry of people who have the gifts of caring, listening, comforting, encouraging, visiting, and praying with others.

The Pastoral Care team does not provide counselling or specialist help. The members are available for visits, prayer, spiritual guidance, and practical help as deemed appropriate.

A list of the team members is posted in the church narthex and lobby. Their contact information is also available through the church office — 604-467-1715.
